NEWS BULLETIN: Robbery suspect photographed

Date: December 31, 2012

3:30 p.m. Update

Police released a picture of the suspect in this afternoon’s robbery at U.S. Bank in Jackson, who is still at large.

The photographs, shown below, were taken at the bank by surveillance cameras.

One shows a man in an “English” style cap facing a teller, whose back is to the camera. The other shows the same man again, this time with a teller behind him.

No weapon is obvious in the photographs and police said he did not show one. Authorities would not say if the suspect got away with any money but released a wanted poster labeled “bank robbery.”

The suspect is a white man in his 40s, 6 feet two inches tall, weighing around 300 pounds, according to a description released by the Jackson Police. He has a gray goatee and mustache and talks with a strong South African accent or one that sounds similar.

Police describe the man as “muscular to slightly obese” and noted that his ears stick out from his head.

He left the scene on foot and may have gotten into a late 90s SUV or blue Suburban. Police arrived two minutes after the 12:38 p.m. call to dispatch, but the suspect already was gone.

It is not safe to assume he is unarmed, Jackson Police Department Lt. Cole Nethercott said. Anyone who sees a person matching the description should not approach him, police said.

When last seen, he was wearing tan pants, a white button-down shirt and a dark-colored overcoat that would typically be worn over a suit, according to the wanted poster. He also wore Oakley-style sunglasses and had a large silver watch on his left wrist.

The bank building and parking lot were declared free of explosives a little before 1:30 p.m. and officers remained inside investigating. The bank, located on Powderhorn Lane, was closed and an unmarked police car blocked the entrance on Powderhorn.

Police were around the bank and in the surrounding blocks for hours after the incident.

The Jackson Police Department released these photographs of a robbery suspect taken by surveillance cameras at the U.S. Bank where the incident took place Monday afternoon.

NEWS BULLETIN: Bank robbery reported

Police have responded to a report of a bank robbery at U.S. Bank in west Jackson and are seeking a tall, large, white male suspect.

A county police dispatcher began alerting police and sheriff’s deputies just after 12:30 p.m. of a bank robbery. The suspect was described as a large male, heavy set, very tall. He was wearing a white newsboy or polo cap, tan pants, round sunglasses and might have been driving a blue SUV.

The scene outside the bank was calm at 1 p.m. with police checking the location for explosives, a reporter at the scene said.
