A downed single-engine plane was found Saturday morning after searchers spent a week battling harsh weather and terrain.

Sublette County Tip Top Search and Rescue volunteers spotted the wreckage from the Teton County Search and Rescue helicopter.

The pilot, 63-year-old Myles McGinnis, of La Barge, did not survive the crash, according to a Sublette County Sheriff’s Office release.

An opening in the weather was the break needed to locate the plane, which had been missing since Nov. 17.

The search focused in the correct area in Sublette County all along, though there was no sign of the wreckage until the weekend.

The crash site was 1.6 miles from the last radar contact with the plane, near the Lincoln and Sublette county line in the Upper Hoback area of the Wyoming Range. Snow and debris covered the wreckage during the early days of the search. Higher winds and warmer temperatures allowed aircraft to join the search and cleared away some of the snow from the mostly white plane, the Sublette County release said.

The plane, a Cessna 182, was en route to Pinedale from Stevensville, Mont., when it went down. Late in the afternoon of Nov. 17, Civil Air Patrol reported McGinnis and his plane overdue and out of contact.

Ground teams from Lincoln and Sublette county search and rescue groups, and air support from Civil Air Patrol and Teton County Search and Rescue spent last week combing the heavily wooded area.

Snow and fog kept aircraft on the ground during the early days of the search.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.
