A man who collided with a wall while playing soccer at the rec center is on life support and not expected to revive.

Nicolas Izard, 32, suffered brain damage Thursday night at the Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center.

A spokesman at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center said Sunday that Izard was in critical condition. Friends were told he is brain dead.

Izard is married to Sasha Tingle-Izard; they have a young daughter.

The soccer game was being played on a basketball court. Izard and an opposing player ran past the end of the court and into the wall.

“At the end, where the baskets are, there’s nothing there but a concrete wall,” said teammate David Baker. “He and the other guy got tangled up, and unfortunately Nick bore the brunt of the collision.”

People in the game who had emergency medical training stabilized Izard until EMTs arrived from St. John’s Medical Center. He was flown to Idaho for advanced treatment.

Baker said friends had been told Izard “has been declared brain dead, but he’s on life support to keep his body functioning because he’s an organ donor.”

Izard’s younger brother, Brian, was at the rec center waiting to play in the next game. Both men have been involved in soccer in the area, and Brian Izard has coached with Jackson Hole Youth Soccer.

Izard worked in maintenance for Grand Teton National Park. He was an active member of Cornerstone Church, an independent church in Wilson.

Pastoral assistant Matt Mumma said Izard “was always willing to be that guy to stay late to help” the church and its members.

“He was a man who loved his family, his wife, his daughter, loved God with all his heart, he loved the church,” Mumma said. “We’re all mourning, but we rejoice at the same time. We rejoice because we know he’s in heaven, he’s with his Lord, where he wants to be.”

A fund to help Izard’s family has been started in his name at First Interstate Bank.
