Two killed, one injured in car-motorcycle crash

Two Utah men were killed and a Utah woman injured Saturday when a motorcycle crashed into a car on Highway 89 in the Snake River canyon.

Gerald West, 57, of Ogden, and Arnold Monk, 72, of Layton, were pronounced dead at the scene. Gloria Monk, 69, was taken to St. John’s Medical Center.

The Monks were driving southbound when their car veered off the road about three miles north of the Teton-Lincoln county line. Gloria Monk, the driver, overcorrected into the northbound path of West’s motorcycle, said Lt. Tom Kelly of the Wyoming Highway Patrol. West ran into the front passenger side of the Monk’s car, where Arnold Monk was sitting.

The wreck closed the road in both directions for about an hour and backed up traffic for miles while the Highway Patrol investigated and cleared the scene.

Patrolmen are unsure why Gloria Monk went off the road to begin with, but have ruled out alcohol or drugs as factors in the wreck, Kelly said.

Monk was released from the hospital Monday morning, Kelly said.

Both Gloria and Arnold Monk wore seat belts, but West was not wearing a helmet, Kelly said.

“There’s a good chance it would have saved his life,” Kelly said. “But really it was just one of those things. Wrong place at the wrong time.”

Highway Patrol turned the details of the case over to the Teton County prosecutor’s office to determine whether Gloria Monk will be cited or charged with a crime. The possibilities range from a ticket for failure to stay in her lane to a vehicular homicide charge, though Kelly said he believes the latter is unlikely.
